If there are circulatory problems in the brain, it can cause vascular dementia. It happens
more often than expected. Researchers estimate that 15% of people with
dementia have this type of dementia.
Causes of Vascular Dementia
Vascular
dementia often develops in people with cardiovascular disease, or in people who
have had it. People who have had a TIA are more likely
to develop vascular dementia. In a TIA (short for Transient Ischemic
Attack), a blood vessel in the brain is temporarily blocked by a blood clot. As
a result, someone develops symptoms such as a crooked mouth, confused speech
and a lame arm. That blood clot dissolves again, usually within half an
hour. The symptoms of failure also disappear. If you observe these
symptoms, call your doctor right away. A TIA can be an announcement of a
stroke.
